Porto lose cup final, while Monaco miss out on championship

On a bad weekend for the UEFA Champions League finalists, FC Porto lost the Portuguese cup final, while AS Monaco forfeited their chance of winning the French league title.

Porto's hopes of claiming their second treble in a row - last season Jose Mourinho's men won the league, the cup and the UEFA Cup - ended in the final of the Portuguese Cup. Watched by Monaco coach Didier Deschamps the cup-holders took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Derlei, only for Panagiotis Fyssas to equalise in the 59th minute. After the dismissal of Jorge Costa in the 70th minute Simão Sabrosa scored Benfica's winner in extra time.

A day earlier AS Monaco dropped out of the race for the French league title, going down 4-1 at home to Stade Rennes. The visitors took the lead as early as the sixth minute. And despite an immediate equaliser by Monaco's Spanish striker Fernando Morientes, three more second-half goals put paid to the Monegasques' title hopes.

Meanwhile the French Football League (LFP) has given AS Monaco more time to prepare for the UEFA Champions League Final in Schalke on 26 May. Monaco's final league game at Girondins Bordeaux has been pulled forward from 23 May to 21 May.
